I have a godson who graduated college a few years back and he has excelled as a

salesperson in a business enterprise software company. They now want to put him in

a position of leadership. He texted me asking for my advice,

what should he do and what should he expect? Well, I wrote him a letter so that he had something to

refer to over and over through the trials of tribulations he was now

about to face. By the time I was done writing the letter and then re-reading it, I thought,

wow, I wish somebody had told me this when I first started out. it would have saved me a lot of blood loss.

I also thought this is something I think any leader would benefit from hearing even if only to

validate what it is that you've experienced and that what you've experienced is normal.

So let me read you the letter.

It says, Dear Jackson, stepping into a leadership role is a daunting and brutal experience. It is a transforms. Your personal life is sidelined and your professional identity becomes your new face to the world.

Your words are no longer your own, they are amplified, they are scrutinized, and potentially twisted.

People will view you differently,

their interactions colored by your title.

You have to be their leader first, their friend second.

You become a figure to be analyzed,

the fodder of gossip, a target for criticism, and sometimes even mockery.

Success won't shield you from this. In fact, it often amplifies it.

People will often begrudge your achievements, even revel in your failures.

Why? To soothe their own failures, shame, and insecurities.
