This episode is for Sophia Carpenter, who wanted to hear a story about an amazing abandoned

place of the world. This one's for you, Sophia.

In this episode for Sophia, we are going to be returning to a time period,

which is the backdrop for quite a number of stories I've already told you in past episodes.

The 1910s, 20s, 30s and 40s were kind of crazy and turbulent years all over the world.

In the years following the First World War and the late 1910s, the country of Germany,

who had been instrumental in starting that war, well, they were commanded by other leading

countries to pay reparations. Reparations are large amounts of money paid to try to write a

wrong done to someone. Germany's reparations for World War I were huge. They were so big in fact

that Germany had to borrow a lot of money to pay them. This made the German economy

weak and shaky. The people of Germany felt depressed and angry. Their country was weak and

vulnerable and it was just a bad time for them. I've told you quite a few stories about the

German dictator Adolf Hitler, who rose to power during this time period. This guy is one of

history's most notorious and infamous villains and his political party, the Nazis,

were cruel and evil. So how did Hitler and the Nazis gain so much influence over the people

of Germany? I mean, didn't the people see what was happening? Well, when the Nazis came to power

in Germany, they began the immediate transformation of their country into the most highly industrialized
