Summary

I’m pretty sure that in thirty years of priesthood, I’ve never preached on this Sunday’s short second reading from Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians. And what a little gem it is! Isn’t it fascinating that St. Paul, precisely in the context of a letter to his church on spiritual matters, endeavors to speak of work? When we do authentic work—of whatever kind—we participate in God’s ongoing creation and providence. Don’t follow the instinct to secularize work; rather, see your daily labor, however humble, as part of God’s plan to bring you to joy.

this type in both the first reading and the gospel for this weekend. It's funny

I realized something as I was preparing this homily that I've preached many

1:00.9

many times over the years on this great topic of the apocalyptic. I've talked

1:06.3

about apocalypsis, right? To the unveiling, the showing fourth of a new world,

1:12.4

etc., etc. But then I remarked that short second reading from Paul's second

1:20.3

letter to the Thessalonians, which I'm pretty sure I've never preached on in

1:25.9

30 years of priesthood. And I realized that I peruse it. What a little gem it is.

1:33.4

And so I made a decision. You're not going to get a sermon on apocalyptic. If you

1:38.0

want to look back at some of the other ones, you're going to find them. But you're

1:41.4

going to get a sermon on second Thessalonians. This letter, the Paul wrote to the

1:48.2

little Christian community that he had founded in this Greek seaside city of

1:53.6

Thessalonica. I was there a few years ago recording for our Catholicism series

1:58.7

Beautiful City. And it goes back, you know, to ancient times. The first letter he wrote
