strange and horrible thing he did in the name of keeping his father happy. A boy who was just

14 years old and was about to face the courts with a charge of first-degree murder. So if you like

Joshua Earl Patrick Phillips was born on March 17, 1984, in Allentown, Pennsylvania,

to a father who abused both drugs and alcohol, as well as his

wife and son. Joshua would recall being terrified of his father, a strict disciplinarian who would

fly into a rage if other children were in his home, especially young girls.

Melissa Phillips, Joshua's mother, would later say that she never understood why her husband

disliked girls so strongly.

By November of 1998, Joshua, then 14 years old, was living with his family in Jacksonville,

Florida, where he was described by neighbors as, quote, quiet and friendly.

Joshua was so unsuspecting that, when speaking about the boy who befriended her eight-year-old

daughter, Maddie Clifton's mother would say how the pair were good friends to one another,

and that Joshua never gave her any reason to worry despite their age difference.
