And when I first arrived at Guantanamo, I'm happy because I trusted an American justice.

I was never, never did I believe I would be eight years a prisoner without trial.

And then the United States of America would use fear and terror to control me.

That's a French actor named Tahir Reihin playing in Guantanamo Bay,

DTN, in a film called The More Tainian that's been playing on showtime in recent months.

It's a powerful story of a young man named Muhammadous Sly, who was held for 14 years in

Guantanamo, accused of being an al-Qaeda operative who recruited the hijackers for the 9-11 attacks.

For a while, Sly was viewed by the United States government as one of the most significant high-value

detainees at Guantanamo. And under direct orders from then the Secretary of Defense Donald

Rumsfeld, he was subjected to special interrogation methods. He was beaten, kicked, and smashed across

his face, subjected to extreme cold and sexual humiliation by female interrogators,

and threatened with execution during a boat ride where he was force-fed seawater.

Having been tortured, Sly, he confessed to whatever the US government wanted him to say.

Until a defense lawyer, Nancy Hollander, played in the film by Jody Foster, took up his case,

and the prosecutor assigned to bring him to trial, refused to do so in protest.

Sly, who withdrew every word of his confession, was finally released and sent home.

A reminder about the excesses that still haunt prosecutions of those remaining in Guantanamo.
