Well, I have been in an apprenticeship of grief for decades.

Really started in my childhood with the loss of innocence from sexual violence

and sexual abuse. But really in earnest when I was in my 20s, my maternal grandmother,

Nancy, suddenly on a November night in 1995, went missing from her home. And my grandfather discovered it

in the morning. It took, you know, all of the family gathered, of course, and all of us were

very scared, concerned, confused, and were looking for her. All the signs pointed to foul play. And about two weeks later, we discovered her body in a shallow grave near the river by her house. This is in a very small rural town in Idaho. Not a lot of resources, not a lot of experience with this kind of a crime. And she died by a blow

to the head and strangulation and possible sexual assault. And all the evidence pointed to one man.

And he was familiar to the family because he had done some work for my grandmother.
