Summary

Every night, a woman is home with her loving husband. But when the sun rises, she magically turns into a beautiful flower—one of three growing in the meadow. One day, she asks her husband to find her among the flowers. But how will he know which one she is?

Good evening, children. It's Granny McDuff, ready with a story. So make yourselves comfy, and I'll begin.

A riddle is a riddle, is a riddle. Shall we solve it together?

Once upon a time, there were three flowers in a meadow.

They were lovely, but they were not really flowers.

They were enchanted.

You see, the flowers were not really flowers.

They were ladies.

A spell had been put on them.

And so here, in the meadow, as flowers, they remained.

However, one of them was allowed to go home every evening. She did not know why. It was just how the spell had worked on her.

So every evening she would go home and have supper with her husband.

Before the sun would rise, back to the meadow she'd go, and there she would become a flower once again.

All day she would sit with her companions and bask in the sunlight.

It wasn't all bad, but the lady did long to be home.

So one night, she said to her husband,

"'Husband, if you come to the meadow in the day and pluck me from the earth,

then I shall be set free and never have to leave home again.

The lady wasn't sure this was true, but either way she would be free.

Either the spell would be broken, or he could plant her in a pot.
