Summary

When the miller offers his mill to the apprentice who brings the most beautiful horse, young Alexander sets off to find one. But instead of a horse, he finds a talking cat with a magical castle — and a few clever challenges. Can Alexander earn the most magnificent horse the world has ever seen?

So make yourselves comfy, and I'll begin.

Once upon a time, there lived an old miller, who had no family, but three apprentices apprentices who worked under him in his mill the old miller

had been growing weary for a time and one day said to the three apprentices i am old and shall retire soon

i should like to sit by the fire and read, go to town when I please,

and walk through the meadow in the sunshine. Now go out and whichever one of you finds me the best

horse, I shall give you the mill and in return you shall care for me until my days are done.

The three apprentices did as they were told.

But as soon as they were away from the mill, two of them turned to the third,

who was quite a bit younger and smaller than the others, and said,

You go your own way, we've no time to waste on waiting for you to keep up.

But the young Miller, who was called Alexander, would not have it.

He stood his ground, and soon the other two apprentices gave in and let him go with them.

When night came, they decided to take shelter in a cave they had passed by.

Alexander went to sleep.

When he woke the next morning, he found himself all alone.
