Big Data for both government and the corporate world seems to be a process of save it all and figure out what's useful later.

That model has some big flaws.

Security expert Bruce Schnerr closed out the Kito Institute's conference on surveillance held this week.

Data fundamentally is a byproduct of the Information Society.

Everything we do on a computer creates a transaction record, everything.

And that data is there.

You have to actually work to make a computer not produce data about a transaction.

Browsing the net, making a phone call,

paying with a credit card, anything.

All of our socialization on the internet

produces data, email, text messages, phone calls, internet telephony, Facebook chat, all of this.

And this data is increasingly stored and searchable.

And Moore's law at work.

Data storage drops to free, data processing drops to free,

and it's easier to save everything and figure out what to save.

And this is the promise of big data. Save it all, you'll figure it out later and this is what's happening I

I looked at my email to the early days of mail I had hundreds of email boxes for people and projects in different years.

That stopped, that changed in 2006. Before 2006, hundreds, after 2006, 4.

Because for me for email in 2006,

search became cheaper than sort.
