For a nurse, code blue is a call to arms. A patient is in bad trouble. Four years ago, that

happened at the outpatient surgery center in Florida, where Teresa Schuster works. Schuster's been a nurse

for nearly 40 years. That day, a patient's heart had stopped during a procedure. That sparked a code blue.

The medical team used a defibrillator, got the heart beating again, and all of a sudden, the patient woke right by back up and he's like, hi, what happened?

We're like, you know, hello, hello, Mr. Smith. How are you doing?

He's like, I'm doing great. Why are you guys looking at me?

Because you were dead for a few seconds?

But it's just his heart just kind of stopped for a second and then we just brought it back to life.

But not every code is life and death. Some are kind of tongue and cheek.

So this pertains mostly to the operating room. I know that it's probably on other people's badges, but we say code brown.

Code brown. Most of the people in the surgeries don't go number two. And if it happens sometimes when people are relaxed or they're paralyzed, then that's what we say. That when they soil themselves, it's code browns.

Code brown.

That's so funny.

When you first said that phrase, that was what popped to mind.

I was about to make a joke and then I thought it would be in bad taste.

But that's in fact what it means.

No, it really is.

It is really in bad taste.

And that's really in the OR because it's not something that happens.

You know, on the floor it's the patient to eat the bedpan.

And yes, we never say code brown.

We just like get a bedpan, but it doesn't happen in the OR.
