Dustin Lee Honkin was born on March 22, 1968 in Britt, Iowa, raised by an alcoholic father who just so happened to be a bank robber, became a drug dealer and started cooking his own meth after studying chemistry in college.

Despite how well he did in school, Dustin took what he learned in science class,

and, with the help of his brother and childhood best friend, sold several pounds of methamphetamines

to buyers like Terry DeGues and Greg Nicholson. It wasn't long before Dustin found himself

in the custody of federal authorities, and, after months of negotiating with

his attorney, decided to plead guilty to the federal drug charges in July of 1993.

Testifying against him during his grand jury trial was Greg Nicholson, who, as Dustin had

learned, had been cooperating with the government the entire time. Enter Angela

Jane Johnson, born January 17, 1964. Dustin's girlfriend, who, pregnant with his child, filed

for an application to purchase a handgun on July 3, 1993, and, three days later, obtained a 9mm from a Waterloo pawn shop. A week before Dustin

Honkin was scheduled to appear in court to officially enter his plea, Greg Nicholson, his 32-year-old

girlfriend, Lori Duncan, and her two daughters, 10-year-old candy and 6-yearyear-old Amber all disappeared off the face of the earth.

With no one to testify against him, Dustin backed out of his plea and the government was forced to drop its case.

That November, Terry Deguze was reported missing as well.
