dot com, I'm Bob Carlson, and this is Unfictional.

Unfictional is a program of stories and personal documentaries. Today on the program, two stories about folks who find themselves a long way from home.

Later in the second story, it's a matter of choice

because of love and family. But in this first one a pair of young brothers plan an

exciting trip all the way to the Amazon jungle in Peru. But because of some bad judgment

and bad luck, they're forced to plan an emergency getaway. From KCRW.com, it's unfictional.

So tell me about when we first landed in Peru.

Our plan the whole time had been, let's not make any plans, let's get down there, feel out Lima,

and see where we want to go by using the guidebook.

We end up leaving our guidebook on the plane.

Maybe that should have been a sign of the things to come.

So that's my brother Elliot you just heard.

My name's Elliot Adler, I'm a student at the University of Washington.

And the things to come he just mentioned were far more costly than forgetting a guidebook on an airplane. Those things that come would lead him to say,

I kind of thought we were going to die.

And my mother to say,

I don't think I've ever been that scared in my whole life.
