Paris Salinas and recorded a phone conversation that I'm going to share with you now.

When my producer, Erica, and I decided to start these many episodes,

we would reach out to really wise people to get their advice and ideas on all sorts of things

At this moment in time, with civil unrest, protest around the country,

in a long overdue conversation about racism in America,

we thought about calling in an expert on racism or black history.

But in the end, with the suggestion of my husband Graham, he said,

why don't you just call a friend who's black and have a heart-to-heart conversation?

So that is what I did. I called my friend Paris. We have known each other for over a decade,

and we have never had a conversation about my whiteness or her experience

as a mixed-race black woman.
