In the previous chapter, Sarah's lavish birthday party abruptly halted by tragic news.

Her father had died, his fortune from the diamond mines lost, leaving Sarah penniless.

Miss Minchin, enraged by this turn of events, immediately strips Sarah of her privileged status, condemning her to a life

of poverty and servitude. Becky, the scullery made, secretly learns of this tragedy and is deeply

saddened for the former little princess.
