Summary

Imagine going through airport security ... without being at the airport! Just one of the stories we cover as Jenna previews a busy news week ahead of Memorial Day.

The focus remains on President Trump returning from a historic China trip while Congress readies for primary elections in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon, and Pennsylvania as midterm pressure rises.

Did you know 250 years ago our founders called for fasting and prayer? This inspired this week's prayer event on our National Mall.

Speaking of the mall ... a lawsuit swirls over a proposed change to the National Mall's Reflecting Pool. Should it become “American flag blue” or stay more subdued?

Also Louisiana takes on the FDA, but the Supreme Court chooses to not weight in on medication typically used for abortions. The cases may reverberate nationwide as states try to make the case for protecting their laws.

Finally ~ Would you try off-site TSA screening? We report. You Decide. ;)

My name is Jenna, and this is Smarter News.

In the news, there's always a story behind a story.

0:17.0

There's always a bigger picture amidst all the clutter that we have of information in our lives. And that's what we're going to focus on today at Smarter News. I'm glad to see everybody. Thank you for joining us for Scoop where we give you a scoop of news, like the really good stuff that you need for the week ahead. So you feel prepped and ready and prepared for the stories that at least we know about it this time. Of course, anything can happen.

Life is unpredictable, but there are some things that we can dig into, and that's what we're going to do today. As I was looking at the stories in front of us, I thought there's a lot of headlines that keep on getting recycled, but no one's sort of taking that big step back to say, well, this is really what this story is about, and here's what's really at stake. We get a little caught up in the details and that's natural. We all do it in our own lives. Don't we get really focused on the details? It's hard to pull yourself back and say, okay, here's the bigger picture. But that's what we're going to do today. One of our, we're going to go through a couple of the big stories just to have on your radar. And then we're going to talk about two legal cases that I think are really important that aren't really getting the coverage that in perhaps another news cycle, they may or may they may not. But I think they're really interesting. So that's what we're going to do here. That's what happens when you run your own news platform. You get to make these sort of editorial decisions. But I actually do think these stories are really interesting. One is a case out of Washington,

1:45.6

D.C. One is the case out of Louisiana. So let's just jump right in. We have Congress in session. We have a whole bunch of different hearings that are going to happen on Capitol Hill and a whole bunch of different topics. So you're going to see sound bites throughout the week, whether it's from the acting attorney general or otherwise testifying in front of Congress. As you know, those testimonies can be combative.

1:47.5

They can start their own new cycle.

1:45.6

So simply knowing, or otherwise testifying in front of Congress. As you know, those testimonies can be combative.

1:50.4

They can start their own news cycle. So simply knowing that Congress is in session and hearings are taking place before the Memorial Day holiday is important. So we have lawmakers back in town

1:54.8

and this is going to be a lively week. We have President Trump returning from China. This was a

2:00.0

historic trip. And as we talked

2:01.3

about last week, one of the things we were looking for at Smarter News is whether or not there

2:06.4

would actually be any news. You know, it was really a question for us going into this story about

2:11.8

feeling rather than necessarily content. Would there be a big blowup and a disagreement?

2:16.6

Would there be coming together of sortsup and a disagreement? Would there be a coming together

2:18.8

of sorts and an announcement? But really what we were wondering is what would be the feeling

2:24.3

on the other side of this trip? That could actually be the most important thing here.

2:28.4

And as we looked at the news over the weekend, obviously paying attention to President Trump

2:33.0

meeting, a different variety of meetings that were happening in China, you could come back and say, well, no news is good

2:39.2

news or no news is no news. It depends on how you look at it. There's not like this huge headline

2:43.9

coming off this trip, other than these two leaders that represent the two largest economies

2:48.6

in the world, seem to get along. And there wasn't this
