Summary

A Holy Pause: John 8:1-11: Daily Devotional, Daily Bible Study In this episode, Rachael Groll takes a closer look at the moment in John 8 when Jesus bends down and writes in the dirt, showing that it was anything but a random gesture. She walks through some of the main scholarly ideas about what He may have written, but focuses even more on what His silence and His posture say to the accusers standing around Him. Rather than feeding their desire to condemn, Jesus turns the spotlight back on their own hearts. This powerful scene becomes an invitation for all of us to pause, examine our motives, and let His mercy shape the way we see both sin and judgment. ☆Go Deeper and Learn to Hear God’s Voice: Knowing Jesus Course ☆To Learn More About Sponsoring a Child, check out Compassion International here:  ➤  Sponsor a Child ☆Go on a trip with Rachael: Bible Study Live ☆Have a question for Rachael? The Greek language adds depth to the understanding of this moment. This scene is unique as it is the only instance of Jesus writing. Scholars have differing views on what Jesus wrote. Some believe he wrote the sins of the accusers. Others think he referenced the law itself. The act prompts reflection among the accusers. It serves as an invitation for self-examination. Understanding this moment can deepen biblical interpretation. The context of the scene enriches its meaning. Have you ever had a moment where you were caught in a situation and pretty much you were guilty?

0:20.4

I mean, everybody was judging you and pointing fingers, but the reality was you were guilty.

0:26.8

And I realized that we all make mistakes.

0:30.1

That's part of the human experience.

0:32.5

But when that happens, you can feel so exposed and those moments can feel overwhelming.

0:39.2

Like there's no way to move forward because you're just overwhelmed with shame and that feeling

0:44.4

like a punch in the stomach.

0:46.3

Well, that's exactly the scene that we're moving into today.

0:49.2

We're moving into John chapter 8.

0:50.9

And I'm actually going to divide John chapter 8 up into three different episodes because

0:55.5

there's a lot happening and I want to make sure we don't miss any of it. The first part of John

1:00.9

chapter 8 is a scene that you likely have heard of before. It's the moment where a woman who is caught

1:08.6

in the very act of adultery is drug before Jesus. The Pharisees are ready

1:14.4

to stone her, which essentially means kill her, because they want to enforce the law with this

1:21.4

really strict judgment. And yet there was something more going on behind the scenes. This was actually an attempt to trick and trap Jesus.

1:32.3

And so it's this dangerous, tense moment.

1:36.4

And what we see happen is Jesus does something that is completely unexpected, as he often does.

1:42.8

And so we're going to be talking about grace and mercy and confronting

1:47.4

things like hypocrisy. I'm going to walk through these verses, verse by verse, because I want to make

towards us and things like sin and repentance.
