| 0:00.0 | Hi everybody, welcome to Your Move where we help you make better decisions and live with fewer regrets. |
| 0:06.0 | I'm Andy Stanley and I'll be your guide. And today we're talking about the American dream. And you know what the American dream is. The American dream is the ability to do what you want to do, when you want to do it, with whom you want to do it, and of course have the money to pay for it. And honestly, I hope all of your American |
| 0:21.0 | dreams come true. But there's one thing. There's one thing you should know is you pursue that |
| 0:26.1 | dream. And that one thing is the one thing we're talking about today right here on your move. |
| 0:30.3 | Stick around. |
| 0:35.5 | Hi, everybody. I have some great news for all the women in the audience. Today's message is for all the men in the audience. Married, single, young, not so young, fathers, want to be fathers, may be scared, you might be a father. Anyway, as men, I think we all have something in common. |
| 0:59.8 | There is an underlying, often, I think, overlooked component in our pursuit of success. |
| 1:08.2 | And to be clear, I don't think this is unique to men, but the successful women I know seem to have a way better handle on this than most of us do. And this unspoken, sometimes unrecognized component to our quest for success |
| 1:13.9 | is this word, autonomy, autonomy. There's something, I think, in most of us that wants to be |
| 1:20.4 | self-governing, right? I mean, after all, to some extent, it's the American dream, or at least the way |
| 1:25.8 | the American dream has been presented to most of us. I think for most of us, men, it's pretty much our definition of success, right? I mean, to do what I want to do, when I want to do it, and to have enough money to pay for it. I mean, it's an alluring goal to be sure. And I think in addition to our ego, I think some other things fuel this. First, we've seen it. |
| 1:45.8 | And since we've seen it, we can't unsee it. |
| 1:48.1 | I mean, think about it. |
| 1:48.7 | Most of our role models appear to be completely autonomous. |
| 1:52.2 | Our corporate heroes, athletic heroes, the arts. |
| 1:56.2 | I mean, they all appear to operate unfettered |
| 1:59.2 | by financial or sometimes even relational restraint. But for you, |
| 2:04.4 | there may be even more to it. Maybe for you, there's something else that fuels your quest for |
| 2:09.0 | autonomy. Maybe it was the way you were raised. If you grew up in a home where money was always |
| 2:14.4 | tight, if you spent a season or two living with relatives |
| 2:18.9 | or maybe worse, autonomy may not feel like a nice to have for you. |
| 2:23.2 | For you, it's a must have. |
