Today's conversation on Backport's Theology is the part two sequel of an antidote to self-centeredness disguised as spirituality.

I'll never forget a conversation I had many years ago with a friend from church

who'd convinced herself that God was blessing her decision to leave her loving husband of almost

20 years and her three children for an old high school boyfriend she'd reconnected with on

Facebook. I was dumbfounded and heartbroken by how she twisted Psalm 374,

which says, delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

She twisted that verse to justify having an affair and leaving her family because that was the

current desire of her prone to wander heart. Unfortunately, we live in a

world where picking up our cross to follow Jesus, forgiving those who've wounded us, and leaning

not on our own understanding, but trusting that God's ways are higher and better, is all too often

considered archaic and un-evolved. Modern culture tends to measure worth in

likes, conflate purpose with preference, and confuse leadership with narcissism. The bottom line is,

it's more important now than ever before to embrace the gospel story as the ultimate lens

through which we see and understand life. Or pretty soon

everything is going to become way too blurry. Which underscores the need for a new kind of

catechism, a fresh way to understand and communicate the concrete biblical scaffolding of our belief

system as Christ's followers. Dr. Trevin Wax calls what we're

talking about today a disruptive discipleship tool. Isn't that good? A disruptive discipleship tool.

Allie and I call it fresh wind because this conversation with Dr. Wax put so much fresh

wind in the sales of our faith.
