Hey I'm Brian Hyatt and this is Rolling Stone Music Now. I'm about to play an interview I just did with one of the most exciting young artists out there.

She was born Gabby Wilson, but you know her is her. That's

H period E period, our period and she just won an Oscar for the great song she wrote for Judas in the Black Messiah.

She won Song of the Year at the Grammys for her song I Can't Breathe.

And all that happened before she released her debut album that just

came out it's called Back of my Mind. Actually there were a bunch of EP's and

compilation albums before that, but this is her first, as she says,

her first complete statement, her first official full album. And she's only 24 years old.

She's a multi-instrumentalist.

She's probably best known as a guitar player,

but that's far from the only instrument she plays.

And all of that is totally evident on her new album which manages to be a totally modern sounding R&B album

while also incorporating a ton of live instrumentation

and not an easy trick to pull off. So let's get straight to that interview which covers a lot of ground.

Thank you. I'm happy to be here virtually. Exactly. So you've been

releasing music for a while but you know the way things work your album back of my mind is

technically your debut album because the other stuff is technically EPs and it's quite a piece of work.

It's quite a complete piece of work. It's quite a statement.

Maybe start by just explaining that journey, because again, it's

been a minute.

Yeah, I don't really like to call it a debut album necessarily.
