Summary

Happy Jewish Year 5782! While we normally celebrate new beginnings on Rosh Hashana, this year we are choosing to turn to the comfort of some of our favorite things. Join us to celebrate Rosh Hashana and celebrate the new Jewish year with the equivalent of a hug for your years. First, we bring you our interview with star of stage and screen Tovah Feldshuh, who spoke with us a couple months back as part of a live show with the Community Scholar Program and the Merage Jewish Community Center sponsored by the Jewish Community Foundation Orange County and Jewish Federation Orange County. Then, Liel speaks with Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg of the Jewish Bluegrass band Nefesh Mountain. The duo also perform a special song to ring in the new year with Unorthodox. Finally, we bring you a sneak peak of our new Tablet Studios podcast, Adventures with Dead Jews, hosted by author Dara Horn. Join her as she endevours to uncover why everyone loves dead Jews. As always, let us know what you think of the show! Send us comments and questions at unorthodox@tabletmag.com, or leave us a voicemail at (914) 570-4869. You can also record a voice memo on your smartphone and email it to us. Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get new episodes, photos, and more. Join our Facebook group, and follow Unorthodox on Twitter and Instagram. Get a behind-the-scenes look at our recording sessions on our YouTube channel! This is unorthodox. The universe is leading Jewish podcast. And I am Mark Oppenheimer.

Friends, it has been a tough year. It's been a tough couple years. And I want to give you

0:37.2

some happy thoughts today. Here's the first. The first is that a few years ago, I was talking

0:42.4

to a young fellow who had been a couple years behind me in college, who is now a big shot

0:47.4

rabbi. And I'm always a little intimidated when I'm around him. His knowledge of Hebrew

0:53.0

is greater than mine. His knowledge of Talmud is infinitely greater. His knowledge of

0:57.8

people is greater too. He's one of those people who has the book intelligence, but then

1:02.0

also has the social intelligence. He's just kind of someone I admire. And the fact that

1:06.4

he's years younger than I am makes me a little abashed to admire him as much as I do.

1:11.9

But I happen to bump into him in Manhattan, if you can believe it, where people seldom

1:15.6

just bump into each other. And we were walking. And I said to him, he's somebody who does

1:20.6

a lot of work with young people. I said, rabbi, no, I didn't. I used his first name, but

1:25.5

we'll call him Joel, even though that's not his name. I said, Joel, when you're working

1:30.7

with a young person who's new to Judaism, I mean, they're Jewish, but they're interested

1:35.9

in learning more. What do you hope for them? And he said, oh, that's really simple. And

1:42.3

what I thought he'd say was, oh, I know that I've made progress with them. If they're

1:46.2

keeping kosher, or I really hope that they begin fasting on Yom Kippur, or maybe I want

1:53.0

them to be Shoma Shamas. And that's not what Joel said. Here's what Joel said to me.
