0:42.0 | Because the consequences of being rejected were so extreme, our brains and our behavior |
0:46.5 | adapted to do anything we possibly could to avoid disapproval from others. |
0:51.4 | In fact, research has proven how social rejection activates many of the same brain regions |
0:56.3 | that are involved in signaling physical pain, which helps explain why disapproval hurts |

1:02.8 | Even though today, we are no longer living in caves or running around on the loincloth |
1:06.1 | on the savannah as trying to spear our food and dodge predators, our aversion to rejection |
1:11.0 | and disapproval is still deeply embedded into our primal fears. |
1:15.4 | For many, if not most, it consumes our entire self-identity, and it is the primary drive |
