Are you really? Listen on BBC Science. Happy birthday. Back in February, I recorded an episode for Valentine's Day,

where we investigated the relationship between food and love.

And something Chef and Food Writer Skye, McAlpine, said said really stuck with me.

There's something about making a birthday cake

for someone that is the best present in the world.

And there's something about a homemade birthday cake that I think

for a lot of us is filled with nostalgia and with evokes a certain set of feelings that

somehow a shop bought cake never quite does in the same way and that's

not because you know my chocolate cake tastes better than a pastry chef's

chocolate cake in fact very much the reverse.

But I think it's so raw in a way and so obvious

the loving intention with which a birthday cake is made.
