Summary

Ravi sits down with Doug Lemov and former UK Schools Minister Nick Gibb to discuss Nick’s new book, Reforming Lessons: Why English Schools Have Improved Since 2010 and How This Was Achieved, and explore one of the most ambitious education reform stories of the past two decades. Nick lays out how a knowledge-rich curriculum, phonics, behavior expectations, and high-stakes accountability helped England leap from the bottom to near the top of global education rankings. Doug, Ravi, and Nick discuss the sharp contrast between this movement and the state of education in the U.S., where both parties are moving away from rigorous assessments and content standards. They also dig into the political strategy behind the reforms and what it takes to keep them in place. -- Leave us a voicemail with your thoughts on the show! 201-305-0084 Follow Ravi at @RaviMGupta Notes from this episode are also available on Substack: https://thelostdebate.substack.com/ Follow The Branch at @thebranchmedia Listen to more episodes of Lost Debate on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lost-debate/id1591300785 Listen to more episodes of Lost Debate on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7xR9pch9DrQDiZfGB5oF0F

Welcome to The Lost Debate, a show for political eclectics. I'm Ravi Gupta. And in this episode, I interview two titans of education policy and practice. One of those is Nick Gibb, aka Sir Nicholas John Gibb, who served as the Minister of State for Schools a few times over in the United Kingdom, essentially the equivalent of, you know,

Arnie Duncan or Linda McMahon, that kind of role, running the schools for the entire country.

0:28.2

He presided over a remarkable series of improvements to the schools over there and offers a lot

0:35.2

of lessons to us that he outlined in his book called

0:38.4

reforming lessons why English schools have improved since 2010 and how this was achieved. And so

0:43.4

I talked to Nick, but I also have brought in my friend Doug Lamov, who, you know, not only was

the school principal and a superintendent, but has written a series of best-selling books, including

0:53.9

Teach Like a Champion that have revolutionized K-12 education,

0:57.9

but he's also now been advising sports teams, including professional sports teams and athletes and coaches

1:03.9

around the world, all about how to take lessons from the classroom and apply it to sports.

1:08.8

And he has a new book called The Teach Like a Champion

1:11.0

Guide to the Science of Reading, Translating Research to Reignite Joy and Meaning in the classroom. And so

1:16.1

Doug and Nick and I just talk about everything we could possibly learn from what has happened

1:22.4

in the UK. And in many ways, this dovetails with the work that we've done in New Orleans.

1:26.9

For people who are listening, if you haven't yet, I just launched a substack.

1:30.4

If you go to the real ravigupta.substack.com.

1:37.6

And this is where I write about things generally outside of politics and even policy,

1:43.3

where I talk about things like lifelong learning,

1:45.4

et cetera, things that I am writing about in the book that I'll be coming out with in about a

1:50.5

year all about how you can learn new skills and hobbies late into life.
