There is a quote that I love so much.

It's just six words, but to me it is deep.

It is powerful.

It is aspirational.

Sometimes aren't the most blindingly wonderful, powerful things in the world completely simple.

This is a quote from Cicero from many, what, a couple of thousand years ago. My gosh, don't quote me. I'm not sure exactly.

But this is a very ancient quote that's been repeated many times throughout history. And it's simply this, six words.

To be rather than to seem. To be rather than to seem. What does that mean to you? Would you rather be something or would you rather seem it?

When you look around in the world, when you look around people in real life on social media,

are they actually being something, embodying something? Or are they seeming to be or embody something? This is what so much of life is about,

isn't it? So much image management, so much effort, time, care we put into, you know, how we

seem versus how we actually are. Are you trying to seem happy? Are you trying

to seem wealthy? Are you trying to seem buttoned up? This is an expression that I hear over and

over again from high achieving women all over the world all the time. We want to appear buttoned up.

What does that even mean? Does it mean that you look good and you got your

life together and it's calm and not stressful behind the scenes and hey, you also got a great

haircut over there and is that a new watch? Like, what? To be rather than to seem. If there's anything that I've learned, especially this year,

it's that I don't care about performance. I care about substance. I don't care about performance. I don't

care about performance on my behalf or on anybody else's behalf.

In fact, my antenna, is that the right word?

My antenna for even spotting it has become so clear.
