Now, traditionally, Edward II is supposed to have died after an unfortunate meeting with a red hot poker. Which has always been my firmly and fondly held belief.

But ladies and gentlemen,History sleuths,  other views are, in fact, available. So this episode is all about whether Edward was

A) Murdered in 1327 on the orders of Roger Mortimer

OR

Hello everyone and welcome back to the History of England.

0:16.5

Last week we left things in a ferment of intrigue and suspense with the execution of the

L of Kent.

0:21.9

So you might think that the perfect thing to do this week would be to finish that story

1:14.6

of a letter in 1855.

1:17.7

Essentially, this version says that Ed with the Second wasn't in fact killed, but was

1:22.9

instead secretly kept alive by Ed with the Third and Mortimer and then went to live abroad

1:28.0

before finally dying many years later.

1:31.2

Now normally, this is the sort of thing one would dismiss as fodder for the credulous

1:36.0

and pathological conspiracy theorists, but then the historian Ian Mortimer picked it

1:41.2

up, and he made a pretty good case, and he also makes the point that many fine historians
