gist t it's not gist it's gist it's gist To get the gist means to have a basic understanding. You don't understand it perfectly,

but basically you understand. Okay. So a good example would be when I teach a lesson. Do you understand what I'm teaching?

Well, I get the gist. Basically, I understand. I don't know if I could use the expression, but if somebody else used the expression, I could probably understand.

We can use this expression when talking about science. Do you understand nuclear physics?

Well, I get the gist.

Basically, I understand what's happening, but not like a scientist.

That was my nuclear scientist voice.

Yeah. So to get the gist of something is to have a basic understanding of something.
