I felt like a person who didn't have a lot of agency.

I was stuck in this apartment.

I couldn't go home.

I couldn't go anywhere.

And my novel was getting too sad for me, if you can believe it.

My novel about the war, about these three children without agency trying to survive it, was getting too sad for me.

And I just needed a character who could run around, be irresponsible, make decisions, all of which I felt I couldn't do at the time.

And so I decided to just write an irresponsible character.

I made her a spy because I like spy television and decided to experiment.
