It's me Guy from Streetwise Hebrew.

Mishpachot families, a documentary TV series by brothers Tomer and Barak Heiman, is an amazing tool for

Hebrew learners. Why? Not only because it's a documentary and there's no script, but there are

also subtitles in Hebrew, so you can pause and check out words you don't know, copy them,

analyze verbs, and all these things that I like. I understand this is not everybody's

favorite hobby, but when you watch something interesting like stories of five Israeli families,

it's easier to inhale Hebrew structures, words, and idioms. Oren and Michal, two brothers,

were born in Guatemala and adopted by an Israeli family.

We look at their relationship with their parents and how they behave with each other.

Dina and an old lady was born in Morocco and had an unhappy marriage full of violence.

Saar is the gay son of Zionist IDF father.

Yoav never met his father, who is a famous media person here in Israel. and Yonatan is a gay porn star who helps his mom to make ends meet.

The show is interesting because of all these amazing stories

and the Heyman brothers know how to tell a story.

But this podcast is about language, and Mishpachot is a brilliant body of work

because we can see how different Israelis speak Hebrew and how the same people switch between registers and talk differently in different situations. Dina, for example, who was born in Morocco and came to Israel, has got Moroccan accent in her Hebrew, but her daughters switch between standard Hebrew to

Moroccan Hebrew according to the different situations.
