Hello! From CNN, I'm Joe Beck. With the five things you need to know for Tuesday, December 26th.

The US has carried out air strikes targeting a militant group in Iraq overnight, after an attack

on an air base, injured three American troops.

The White House as President Joe Biden ordered hits on three facilities used by the

Iran-backed militant group Kataib Hezbollah and affiliated groups.

CNN's Priscilla Alvarez has more.

Well, these strikes followed earlier strikes in the day that wounded three Americans in

northern Iraq, one of whom, according to the White House, is in critical condition.

Now the president was immediately briefed following that strike and later in the day,

this was yesterday, the defense Secretary Austin presented the president options,

and that is when the president ordered the strike.

Now, U.S. Central Command has since said

that earlier assessments show that they likely killed a number of militants

and that there are no indications of civilian casualties at this point.

The defense secretary going on to note that this was quote necessary and proportionate.

The Iraqi governments as it condemns the US air strikes describing them as hostile acts

that could harm the relationship between the two countries.
