From CNN, I'm Fez Jamil with the five things you need to know for Monday January 1st.

We begin with tsunami warnings and aftershocks in Japan, after a powerful earthquake hit the country today.

That's the sound of people shouting as they ran out of shaking buildings in the afternoon local time.

The US Geological Survey says a 7.5 magnitude quake hit Western Japan,

with at least three strong aftershocks being

reported so far. CNN's Hanako Montgomery is in Tokyo and says the country's

entire West Coast is on alert for tsunamis.

We also know that it was a shallow earthquake, and this is significant because with shallow earthquakes,

they could potentially be more destructive and more powerful, and they could trigger these really massive tsunamis essentially.

We already know that a major tsunami warning has been issued in the city of Noto, very close to the epicenter. This is the first major

tsunami warning that's been issued since 2011. The US says it's not looking

for a wider conflict in the Middle East.

This comes after American helicopters sank three hoothed boats in the Red Sea

after coming under fire, with the Navy saying all aboard the boats were killed.

Iran-backed Huthy rebels have been targeting commercial ships there, saying they're

acting in solidarity with Hamas.

This is the first instance of a direct confrontation between the U.S. and the Huthies since the

October 7th terror attacks, and this has been a source of growing concern within the Biden administration the sense

that this conflict could widen further and that's a significant moment because it is the first time

that the US has killed a member of the Huthi rebel group since the
