House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he still has time to avoid a government shutdown, even though funding runs out tomorrow night.

CNN's Manu Raju has more from the Capitol.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy is pushing ahead to have a vote on Friday, on a short-term bill to keep the government open

for just a handful of days. But there's a problem. He doesn't have the votes

because he has decided he wants to try to get a bill passed on Republican votes alone, and there are more than four Republicans who plan to vote against this short-term plan.

McCarthy is unlikely to get any Democrats on board with his bill because he's included spending

cuts they probably won't agree with. He could change tactics and try to get a bipartisan plan on the

table that has more chance of passing, but that could come at the cost of his job, as some

hardline Republicans are already threatening to oust him.

If the government does shut down, it will impact millions of federal workers. 72,000.

That's the estimate of how many gun suicides could have been prevented since 1999,

if all states followed the country's strictest gun safety laws.

Those numbers come from a new Everytown for gun safety report,

showing that the states with the weakest laws saw suicides jump by almost 40% over the past two decades.

But for states with the strongest gun safety laws, suicide rates decreased slightly in that time.

Every town also scored states based on key gun safety policies, with California

and New York ranking the best when it comes to gun safety and Mississippi and Arkansas coming

last. What's more in states that have poor policy around in in that same time period. Local officials say at least 52 people have died in a suicide attack in southwest Pakistan

and more than 50 are injured.

The explosion went off during a religious procession to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.

One local official believes a deputy superintendent who was killed in the explosion was the target of the attack.
