Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck with the five things you need to know for Friday, September 1st.

The latest jobs numbers are out and 187,000 new positions were added in August.

July's total job gains were revised down to 157,000,

while the unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.8%.

The August report is being watched closely because it could play a big role in the Fed's next decision about interest rates due later this month.

Inflation remains high, but Americans still increased their spending in July, despite rising prices.

We need this money done.

We need this disaster relief request met.

We need to do it in September.

We can't wait.

President Joe Biden is asking Congress for an extra $4 billion for natural disaster recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia.

That's on top of the 12 billion his administration had already requested earlier this month,

to top up FEMA's disaster relief fund, taking the total to 16 billion.

Biden spoke to FEMA employees yesterday.

Calling on Congress to make sure you're able and have the funds to be able to continue to show up

and meet the needs of the American people to deal with immediate crises.
