Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Monday, January 13th.

Dangerous winds are threatening to undo the hard work of firefighters, battling the flames in LA.

We need Mother Nature to give us a break. We have the firefighters, we have the water, we need the time.

The Palisades blaze and the nearby Eton fire are still mostly out of control,

and the renewed Santa Ana winds could make them bigger or even start new fires.

At least 24 people have been reported dead, but dozens are still missing, and it's been

too unsafe for authorities

to assess the true toll.

As CNN's Gloria Pasmino reports, we're starting to learn more about the victims.

We've heard stories of people who stayed behind to fight the flames, the disabled and the elderly

who could not get out, and people who had previously experienced smoke and wildfires

and thought that this time they could fight the flames.

Even as the fires continue to rage,

people have been stepping up to help where they can.

I don't know for all these guys either helping to save my house right now,

but I am very grateful to them.

This woman says as flames spread to her property, burning down her garage, community members came to help because firefighters were swamped.

And this past weekend saw a big donation drive organized to help fire victims, where masses of people showed up.

I think the whole city is affected, whether you've actually had your belongings burnt or not.

We're just wanting to get out and do something, like feel active, and we're actually giving back in some way and supporting the community, feeling part of a community.

Dozens of restaurants have been offering free meals to those impacted, helping first responders

and displaced people alike.
