Firefighters are in a critical stage of their almost week-long battle against the LA wildfires,

as they brace for winds to pick back up again today. Multiple smaller blazes are entirely under

control, but the largest Palisades fire is still only about 13% contained.

At least 24 people have died in the fires, but dozens more are still missing.

The mother of one of the victims says her son refused to leave his home, believing he could

save it.

I told him just like I'd done before, grab your cat and run off to a shelter where you'll be safe.

So obviously, he didn't do that.

He said, I'm not in the league and he said, I've got a garden hose.

And he said, I'm going to stay.

Fire officials estimate that more than 5,000 homes have been destroyed,

and California's governor Gavin Newsom

warns it could take six to nine months

before toxic debris is removed from neighborhoods.
