Hello from CNN I'm Joe Beck with the five things you need to know for Tuesday

January 2nd. Authorities in Japan are describing a battle against time to find

survivors after a powerful earthquake struck

the west coast of the country on New Year's day. Dozens of people have been killed by the

quake and more than 24 hours after it hit, there was still limited access to the epicenter.

And a Japanese Coast Guard plane on its way to help with rescue efforts was hit by a Japan Airlines plane, which was landing at an airport in Tokyo,

killing several crew members.

CNN's Will Ripley is at the scene.

Hey Joe, we just confirmed that five crew members on that Coast Guard plane are now

confirmed dead and the captain of that Coast Guard plane is in critical

condition but the extraordinary part of this story is that around 400 people

on a Japan Airlines jet that had a runway

collision shortly after landing at Tokyo's Hanada Airport right in the heart of the Japanese

capital they are all alive,

367 passengers, eight children under the age of two

and 12 crew members, a truly extraordinary story

at a time that Japan has been rocked

by a lot of bad news lately.

We're less than two weeks away from the Iowa Caucasus,

and polls say former President Donald Trump

is still the clear Republican front runner for 2024.
