January 2nd. Japan is facing a second tragedy in two days after five Coast Guard crew members were killed in a plane crash on a runway.

Their plane collided with a passenger flight at the Tokyo Haneda Airport as it was about to fly to help with relief efforts after a devastating earthquake

that hit the country's West Coast on New Year's day. The passenger plane burst

into flames but all 379 people on board survived, although 17 people were reportedly hurt.

CNN's Will Ripley explains how they were safely evacuated.

Both of the planes were in flames in a matter of seconds and passengers who were on the Japan

Airlines jet described black smoke filling the cabin.

They were terrified.

Parents, you know, trying to keep their kids as safe as they could, wondering if they were going to make it out alive.

A lot of passengers saying they just didn't think that they would, especially when the exit doors,

according to the passengers, in the rear and middle parts of the aircraft were not working properly.

But yet through the front exit doors and there's video of this that's emerging on social media.

People one by one streamed out of each side of the front of the aircraft, and in just a matter of seconds,

all 400 or so people who were on that aircraft made it off alive.

Police say it's not clear what motivated a suspect to crash a car full of gas canisters into a

crowd of concert goers in Rochester, New York.

Two people were killed and nine others were injured in the early hours of New Year's day

when a car drove into another vehicle and then plowed into people leaving the Kodak theatre.

That was followed by an explosion that took almost an hour to put out and police say the suspect also died in the crash.

Rochester's Mayor Malik Evans says his thoughts are with the victims.
