I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Thursday, January 9th.

Residents in California are describing apocalyptic scenes as deadly wildfires rip through homes and reduce entire neighborhoods to ash. Houses were on fire. There was gas shooting out into the road. All of the trees were on fire.

At least five people have been killed, but the number is expected to rise, as multiple blazes

continue to burn across LA County, most of them completely out of control. CNN's Nick Watts is

in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, where the biggest blaze has destroyed a thousand structures.

The two grocery stores in the Palisades here? Huge grocery stores. Gone. The theater.

Gone. The library. Gone. Palisades High School was on fire when I drove past it earlier.

Other schools have gone. Offices. People's lives, even if their homes are still okay,

their lives, their community, there's not much left.

Some firefighters are pulling 48-hour shifts and risking their lives to try to put out the flames.

But weather conditions have made them tough to contain, and while this morning is bringing

some respite from the winds,

they're expected to pick up again tonight.

The smoke is also causing hazardous conditions, making the air and water unsafe in some places.
