Hello, from CNN, I'm Joe Beck with the five things you need to know for Monday

January 29th. President Joe Biden says the US will respond after three

American troops were killed in a drone attack in Jordan.

CNN's Orrin Lieberman has more.

Joe, this is the first time US troops have been killed in an enemy attack in the Middle East

since the beginning of the Gaza War on October 7th.

A one-way drone hit near the living quarters at Tower 22, a base with some 350 U.S. service

members near the corner of Iraq, Jordan, and Syria. Three soldiers were killed and at least

34 more were injured. Eight service members had to be medevacked for treatment.

A big question, how did the drone get through U.S. air defenses at the base?

The U.S. is now vowing to respond, President Joe Biden said as much on Sunday, holding

Iranian-backed militias in the region responsible for the attack, even as Iran itself tries to distance itself from the attack.
