Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, January 7th.

While the winter storm is winding down in parts of the country, a dangerous cold snap is coming in its wake. The snow and sleet that pelted the plains to the east coast for the past four days will be locked in by freezing temperatures,

creating life-threatening conditions for people without power

who don't have access to heat. The National Weather Service says the new Arctic blast will

hit from northern Texas and the plains to the mid-Atlantic, with temperatures expected to dip

between 5 to 20 degrees below average. CNN's Derek Van Dam has more.

Yeah, Joe, I think the word frigid best describes this situation.

And guess what?

The cold air isn't leaving anytime soon.

In fact, over 250 million Americans will feel temperatures below the freezing mark over the next seven days.

And this Arctic air is also dropping the windshield values below zero for much of the Midwest and the Ohio River Valley.

This could cause more black ice on roadways resulting in additional travel headaches on Tuesday, so be aware on the roads.
