We're looking at 23 years of the war, once called the War on Terror,

now called the Long War.

And I welcome the President of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy's Cliff May, President

and founder, who gives us a column in the Washington Times recounting these 23 years and what is to be done.

Cliff, congratulations for your organization.

You know I talk to your talent all the time, but it's a joy to go back to the beginning, those early days after the

attack. You mentioned Jack Kemp no longer with us, but a very strong voice for

democracy once upon a time, and Jean Kirkpatrick. How did it all come together

always and thanks for the kind words about FDD. It really began with a conversation that I had with Gene Kirkpatrick, who as you know,

she had been a lifelong AFL, CIO Democrat, but President Reagan made her his ambassador to the UN.

And Jack Kemp, when I was in New York Times reporter, I covered his campaign for the Republican

nomination in their primaries.

I knew them for my journalistic career.

They came to see me and here's what's not in the column,

but I'll tell you and I think it's interesting.

The first conversation I had with them was not after 9-11.

It was about a week before 9-11.

And basically what they were saying to me is Cliff.

We think America has taken a holiday from history.
