I'm John Bachelor with my colleague Jeff McCausen, the United States Army retired CBS News.

23 years ago, Jeff and I were younger men.

Where were you, Jeff?

Yeah, but where I was, it was it was strange. I was actually overseas. I was

dean of the United States Army War College, held active duty and I was scheduled to give an

address in the Ministry of Defense in Madrid Spain to a collection of senior Spanish officers,

foreign servants, as well as Ministry of Defense types.

As I was walking towards the conference room, this big conference room there in the Ministry of Defense, a Spanish officer grabbed me by the arm, pushed me into an office space.

The first plane had already struck the World Trade Center. I was unaware of that.

And we watched a few moments as the second plane

struck the building.

I remember walking on into the conference room.

I had my remarks on my hand.

As I walked by a wastebasket John I just crushed those

papers and threw in the waistbasket and I don't recall what I said to those people

in detail but I do recall very vividly saying the following. We don't know who

did this but I will guarantee every one of you the following. We will figure that out and we

will go get them and you can write that down.

And then of course my odyssey back to the United States during that particular period of time when air travel was suspended was a bit of a trial.

But I was able to get back to the

war college about three or four days later. The NATO article five was in
