Summary
Max talks with Benjamin Morgan, Executive Director of AOPA Australia about the state of General Aviation in Australia. Number of Private pilots is declining. AOPA is working to inspire youth. They’ve acquired a bus full of simulators they drive around the country, and is buying low cost Cessna 150s for flight training. GA also faces regulatory challenges with CASA, which regulates all aviation in Australia.

The number of flight instructors have declined, since independent flight instructors haven’t been permitted since a rule change in 1999. After that decision, flight training declined significantly. Smaller flight schools have been unable to survive, and a significant number of the larger flight schools have been bought by China, to train pilots for SE Asia. Much training is done through local Aero Clubs, but many of these no longer have any low cost airplanes for flight training.

What we've done locally here in Australia is to look at what was being done by EAA through its

0:06.5

Young Eagles program. We looked at what AOPA was doing through its STEM programs, and we've built

0:12.4

a hybrid of both. So we have a situation where we've just acquired a big road coach, a big 14.9

0:18.6

meter bus that we've branded up with A AOPA. We filled the bus full of

0:22.4

flight simulators and we drive to locations all over Australia and in the last 12 months we went to

0:27.3

36 locations across six states and considering the size of Australia it's a very big undertaking.

0:33.2

I had to volunteer 30 odd weekends of my time to go support it but luckily what's been happening is as I've kind of been pushing and getting that enthusiasm in there,

0:42.4

others are coming on board and saying, hey, Ben, the enthusiasm is great.

0:45.5

Let's do this.

0:46.0

We can make this happen.

Hello, and thank you for joining us for episode 89 of the Aviation News Talk podcast.

I'm your host, Max Ruska.

Today we'll be sitting down with Benjamin Morgan.

0:59.9

He's the executive director of AOPA, Australia, who I met while I was in Australia a few weeks ago.

And if you're not from Australia, well, you might be thinking maybe this isn't relevant to you and the country that you fly in.

1:10.4

But I'd like to suggest that it actually is.

1:13.6

Over the last couple of years, I've heard from many of you who live in Australia,

1:16.8

who have told me that general aviation has been shrinking there, in part because of tough safety regulations.

1:22.3

So I think this is a cautionary tale for all of us to carefully watch the regulations in our own countries to make

1:27.7

sure they don't become too onerous.

1:29.6

Plus, I think you want to hear some of the unique programs that Ben and AOPA are putting

1:33.9

in place to reignite growth in general aviation in Australia.
