This episode is brought to you by our friends at Honeybook! This one is going to be focused on a hot topic that is something you either have been guilty of doing yourself, or it really really irks you. We are going to be talking about the age old question "Hey, can I pick your brain?". We've all been there, either on the receiving end or perhaps sent that message yourself. Someone actually asked me how to address this kind of message in our monthly CEO calls for my membership, which made me realize that this is something I'm sure a lot of you are curious about as well. And if you have sent that message, don't beat yourself up about it , most of the time people who ask that come from a place of really good intention. The issue is a lack of understanding of what you are actually asking for when you send this message, and that's exactly what we are going to go over today, as well as why you need to set these boundaries, and how to answer this question in a kind but firm way. You're listening to the CUPICOLTA CEO podcast, episode 87. Hey, everyone, it's Ellen, and I'm back with another

0:08.4

short and sweet solo episode. This one is going to be focused on a hot topic that you either

0:16.4

have been guilty of doing yourself, or it's something that really, really irks you. So I'm just

0:23.6

going to throw it out there. It's the question, the age old question, hey, can I pick your brain?

0:28.7

Right. We've all been there. We've all either been on the receiving side of that message or perhaps

0:33.2

sent that message ourselves to someone. And honestly, if you have sent that message,

0:38.5

don't beat yourself up about it. Most of the time, I would say 99% of the time,

0:43.1

people asking that question come from a place of really great intention. I think the issue

0:49.6

sometimes is a lack of understanding that if you are seeking someone's time and expertise

0:56.8

for something that they normally charge for, as in this is the thing that they actually

1:04.7

sell in their business or consult on in their business, then it is, I think, honoring of the other person to offer to pay instead of expecting people to work for free if you wouldn't expect the same of yourself or if there isn't an equal trade-off for them to help you in this way. So I bring this conversation up because this was a question that was asked

1:30.8

in my membership recently on a Q&A call. Someone asked, you know, I really, I really want to help

1:36.8

everyone that asked me, but I don't know how to say no without coming off as rude. I don't know how to establish stricter boundaries

1:48.6

on what I can say yes to. I want to help more people, but I don't know how. And so it really got

1:55.3

me thinking, oh, wow, this is a question that plays a lot of people, even very, very seasoned

2:00.2

entrepreneurs. I've had

2:01.2

conversations with my friends in this industry who want to help as many people as they can,

2:06.6

but they just do not have enough hours in the day to actually say yes to every single person

2:12.5

who asked to meet up or ask to pick their brain. So I thought, why not compile a list of five responses that

2:21.0

you can default to anytime someone asks, can I meet up? Can I pick your brain? So I hope that

2:27.4

these help you as much as they've helped me as a recovering people pleaser. It is very difficult

2:32.3

for me to say no, but I have found that by
