Summary

The only man I know who has passed a joint to a chimp sitting next to him in a tree, (or at least, who's admitted it to me!) Richard is a man of many dimensions. In part 1 of what I hope will be a multi-part series, we talk about his education, his first foray into business with one of America's first mountain bike shops, and what lessons rugby imparts in the "third half," among many other fruitful tangents.

Welcome one and all. This week's episode is a conversation. Actually, it's the first

0:08.9

part of a conversation. I hope to continue with Richard Satnik, a very interesting guy

0:15.1

as you'll hear. He founded a restaurant chain up here in Portland called Laughing Planet

0:22.3

about 15 years ago, did very well with it, sold it, and had some health issues along the

0:30.7

way, which was kind of weird because Laughing Planet's a very health conscious kind of restaurant

0:36.8

ended up having a quintuple bypass surgery as a preventive measure, but it was a slap

0:43.6

in the face and he started looking at life a little differently than he had before, particularly

0:50.0

looking at the food industry. He's gotten very serious about the notion of farm to table, food

1:01.1

production and consumption. So he bought a year or so ago, he bought a 60 acres just south of Portland.

1:09.6

He's got a flock of emu, some donkeys, a bunch of chickens, rabbits, beautiful pond in front of

1:18.8

the house, and it's a great place. We were out there in fact sitting in the kitchen when we recorded

1:25.6

this, but it was a barbecue. A bunch of people were coming out, so we got out there a little early to

1:31.6

try to get the podcast done, but then people started showing up a little before we expected them, so we got

1:38.0

interrupted. So this is the first half of the conversation. I hope to pick up the second half with

1:43.3

him soon, but I didn't want to sit on this one too long because it's really fantastic. He's also

1:49.6

got a whimsical kind of toy shop called Missing Link in Portland as well. He's a huge godzilla fan,

1:59.1

he's got all sorts of really cool stuff in his house, arc from illustrations. I don't know if

2:06.0

their originals are not. They look original in their frame, so maybe they are. But anyway,

2:12.4

he's a richer, he's a very interesting cat, and as you'll hear, we don't even get to the restaurant

2:17.0

thing really in this hour of conversation that we have. We're really talking about him growing

2:26.4

up and sort of getting into business and how he fell into this and his previous business projects

2:33.0

involving mountain bikes. He had one of the first mountain bike shops in the country.
