Summary

You may remember back to episode #76 where Emelie and I talked about how we had both gotten new puppies around the same time and how important it is to set ourselves and our puppies up for success. Well, now those puppies are teenagers, but we are still very much thinking about (and talking about in this episode) what we can do with our training to build the skills our puppies need to be successful in sports and in life.

This is a really good tangent, though, because we have been focused on talking about the foundation skills for the dogs, but we need to remember all the foundation skills for the human.

There are a lot of things that we need to be able to do, because we need to be able to give treats with both hands, not just use a left hand, perhaps, if you want to keep our shoulders straight.

Otherwise, we get this disco fever hand going from the...

0:22.4

It gets weird.

0:41.5

All right. So, Emily, we both have young dogs in our house right now.

0:46.2

And we've been talking a lot about the foundation training that we've been doing with those dogs.

And I think we both really like to, well, geek out to a certain extent on that kind of training to really dig into it and identify all the components and look at all the details. And I think one of the things that's kind of cool is that

1:00.0

we like to train foundations for a lot of different things kind of all at once. So we're not just

1:05.7

interested in a specific sport, like even though you're known for agility, I know you also like

1:09.8

to train for a lot of other

1:11.6

sports. And while obedience is really kind of my primary thing, I also like to cross-train

1:16.4

and agility and fly ball and all of the things, barn hunt tracking. And we also both are very

1:22.4

interested in training for life skills, right? Like we're training family members as well as athletes.

1:28.0

And so there's a lot that goes into that. So looking at foundation training, whether it's for

1:32.5

sports or life or both, what do you think is the most critical category of foundation skills

1:39.9

that we should be focusing on? First of all, you just call me a geek.

1:46.5

You started this podcast by calling me a geek,

1:48.8

but I will geek out with you because I am a geek.

1:49.8

It is a compliment.

1:52.4

And I love you.

1:56.5

And the most important set of foundation skills that we have to work with,

1:59.1

I think without doubt, would be reinforcement procedures.
