Summary

Rose Veres, known as "The Witch of Delray", was tried in 1931 for murdering one of her tenants in Detroit, and has been suspected of killing others throughout the 1920s. Karen Dybis, author of "The Witch of Delray: Rose Veres and Detroit's Infamous 1930s Murder Mystery" is my guest on this week's episode of Most Notorious, and not only tells Rose's story, but helps separate legend from the true-life, historical account of her story.

Welcome all to the Most Notorious Podcast. I'm Eric Rivenis. Glad to have you here with me

1:18.7

for another episode of the show. So a great episode today. I'm very happy to have as

my guest Karen Diabas, author of a fascinating book called The Witch of Del Rey, Rose Veris

1:30.6

and Detroit's infamous 1930s murder mystery. Thanks for joining me.

1:38.2

Thank you for having me. I'm thrilled. I feel like I have a decent

1:42.5

size knowledge of American true crime history, but I haven't heard of this before. Is this

1:47.6

a well-known story in Michigan? In Michigan and locally in Detroit, it is part of several

1:54.4

history tours and every now and again it gets dragged out, especially around Halloween

1:59.9

because of the witch nickname that Rose was given. So it seems to be somewhat of a regional

2:05.7

or maybe Midwestern folk tale. How did you decide to pick the topic? Where did you first

2:12.0

hear about this? Well this was a fun one because I had always loved true crime as a reader.

2:19.2

Never to do it as a writer. And a friend of mine had noticed in our local newspaper to

2:24.9

the Detroit Free Press does a lot of fun feature writing, especially on the weekend. So one

2:30.4

of my favorite writers there had been assigned to go on a tour, the local cemetery called Woodmere

2:37.9

where Rose is buried, with having a group of herst owners, like a herst club come in and

2:44.9

they were going to drive around the cemetery and see some of the notable people who were

2:49.2

buried there. You know everything from the guy who started Verner's to you name it,
