Summary

Weight loss is a perennial struggle for many people, and it’s not because they haven’t tried every approach available (including counting calories, restricting carbs, and increasing the amount of exercise they get).

Today’s podcast guest, obesity expert Dr. Barbara Corkey, explains that many people have difficulty losing weight due to factors that go beyond behavioral change. These include the changing macronutrient content of food, additives in carbs that may be affecting our metabolism, and the resulting rise in metabolic disease.

We discuss how individual differences affect the ability to lose weight, the role of genetics and heredity, and how to sort through all of the noise to find the weight loss approach that works best for you.

And this was a conversation that I was hoping to give us maybe a bit more of a nuanced perspective on

1:13.8

metabolic health and body composition and being overweight. There's this one perspective that I

1:22.5

think is overly simplistic, which is it's all about getting yourself on a low carb diet and making sure

1:31.2

you're not doing too much cardio, and then you'll have a perfect body composition.

1:36.3

But as we've talked about in the podcast before, that doesn't seem to account for many

cases.

1:42.7

And we've had some obesity researchers who seem to be a little bit more kind of in the box,

1:47.8

squarely by the data, Stefan Gine and Eric Trexler.

1:54.4

And they paint this picture of weight gain is solely a people are eating more and not moving enough perspective.

But that also doesn't account for clear observations that I think we can all say, well, I know

2:10.5

someone who lives a terrible lifestyle and they're thin and I know someone else who does

2:14.5

everything right and they're overweight.

2:16.4

And this seems to be where Barbara's research has been pointed.

And so this is a great chance to speak with someone who's in academic medicine,
