As a diasporic person, people sometimes, if they're not Sri Lankan or connected to any

Sri Lankan community of any ethnicity, people will give me a lot of authority to talk about

Sri Lanka. And I think this is true of any, I don't know, any person with clear and strong ties to another place. Like, I would trust, instinctively, I would trust, say, a Greek American person to know more about Greece than I would, right? But there's also, I don't know, I found that the amount of authority that I was sometimes given was, like, beyond what I felt I deserved. In fact, that was like pretty

common. And then on the other hand, kind of there's another constituency that will kind of write off

the idea that I might have anything to say or that I should say anything at all because I am Diasborg

and I grew up outside the country. I'm probably pretty square in a lot of ways,

but like a pretty solid way to get me to do things

is to tell me that I shouldn't do them.
