Summary

A short supplemental on one of the inspirations for Merlin, a man named Myrddin the Wyllt, a Welsh warrior bard who went insane after seeing his friends die on the battlefield and ran off to a life in the forest. It would have been fine if people didn't keep dragging him back to civilization...or if he had thought at all about what he would do during the winter. You'll see that "insane" in this story is kind of a loose term for "I just want a little 'me' time in the forest."
On the creature of the week, you'll meet that thing that yells all night in your kitchen and shatters all your good plates, and I'll guess at what she's doing with all that evil linen thread she's spinning.

This week on Myths and Legends, it's a short supplemental episode where I tell the story of a

prophetic bar named Miradin, who inspired the modern conception of Merlin. You'll see that

0:09.0

running away from your problems not only solves all of them, but will get you super special powers

0:13.6

to see the future too. Despite his claims, Miradin will show that he's definitely not over his

ex-wife when he gives her the worst wedding gift imaginable. Also, medieval scientific theory is

adorable. On the creature of the week, if you use the wrong type of dish soap, it's okay.

This house spirit will just stay up all night shattering your dishes and shrieking at your kids.

Some are incredibly popular stories you think you know, but with surprising origins.

Others are stories you probably haven't heard, but really should.

I'm out this week, but I wanted to record a short supplemental on the crazy prophet bar that

1:06.5

inspired Jeffrey of Momoth's Merlin. His name is Miradin Wilde, and he's a Welsh warrior

1:12.2

bard from the 6th or 7th century. Momoth actually writes about him, but he includes him much later,

1:18.0

and calls him Merlin, and to him this story takes place after the death of Arthur.

1:22.1

But it's not really in the continuity we'll be using, so I'm going to call him Merlin.

1:27.4

Momoth is basing history on several different older Welsh sources, and I honestly can't make

1:32.7

heads or tails of them. So I'm just going to go with Momoth's Vieta Merlini, which I've linked

1:37.0

on the transcript page. I'm going to set this before the Arthurian Legends, but really, it doesn't

1:42.4

matter. Like I said, he's based off of maybe real person from the 6th or 7th century.

1:46.9

It's set in a time, once again, where there are several warring petty kings.

1:52.2

Miradin is a warrior bard and an advisor to one of the kings, and he's pretty high up in society.
