milestone. So thanks for listening. Really do mean that. And today I want to talk about yet another

way to think about happiness in life. And I think it's important because there is this assumption

that's baked into our life that discovering and having more options is what will make us happier.

Right? We need to be more flexible. We need to have more doors to open and close, more exits to

explore. We need to be able to revise as often as we can. And the result is

we keep certain doors open. We hedge our bets. We don't go all in and we say, oh, that's,

that's conventional wisdom because it feels responsible, right? It's like, well, don't put all your

eggs in that basket. That feels like a smart thing to do, right? It feels like, oh, this is how I can have some control in my life.

And certainly there is something to be said about being flexible in life.

I talk all the time about reinventing yourself.

But there's interesting research here led by Daniel Gilbert, who I've talked about on the podcast before, that kind of really contrast

against that instinct that we have. And the idea here is that the very flexibility that we

think is conventional wisdom, it might actually be undermining our happiness. And the key is

actually to close as many doors as you can instead of keeping them open.

And Gilbert, along with his colleagues, basically explored a really simple question, which is,

are we happier when our decisions are final or when they're reversible?
